The little VIA ABC

– all you need o know about VIA tiles from A - Z

Air Entrapments.

To minimize air entrapments and to spread the granularity plain, the terrazzo tiles get shaked. It is a light shaking to not destroy the design. Very small air entrapments are still possible because of the granularity.

Blooming.

It is important that no wetness gets under the tiles’ covering. If it happens anyway, calcium carbonate will appear while drying (blooming). This white cover has to be removed abrasive.

Capillary Action.

A missing capillary action can have different causes:

- The floor has been too wet while oiling. The capillaries are filled with moisture.

- Using a gap help. A gap help causes a thin layer which prohibits the infiltration of the oil.

- A wet cleaning just before oiling. A big amount of the water used for cleaning will get into the layer and prohibits the infiltration with oil.

Care.

Lavation and care is part of every cleaning session. Acids make the tiles rough. Please use alkaline and light lubricating cleanser.

To remove rough dirt, you may use scrubbing powder without acid.

Traditionally, cement tiles are cleaned with natural lubricating cleaning soap.

Cement.

Changing.

The tiles are production made uniques. No tile looks like the others. Due to this, color shades appear and show the characteristic changing.

Delivery Time.

The processing time takes about 12 to 18 weeks (special designs). The time is conditional on the drying process.

Design Lines.

Due to the granularity of the material, the tiles’ design is not always absolutely precise. This is the typical character of a terrazzo tile.

Diamond Cutting Pads.

VIA diamond cutting pads polish the tiles’ covering and maximize the shine. These pads are floor cleaning pads which are equipped with thousands of tiny diamonds to clean and polish the for mechanically. Water is needed.

Edge-asperities.

Cement mosaic and terrazzo tiles are cast and not cut. Slight asperities on the edges are possible.

After drying, terrazzo tiles are driven through a polish street. The surfaces are polished according to the classification R9. Due to this process, small rock excavations are possible. This is not avoidable.

Even More Designs.

VIA cement mosaic tiles and terrazzo tiles are variegated combinable. Single tiles may be combined to different designs - up to how you place them.

Fill In Dots.

Complex gauges are used to fabricate multicolored and patterned tiles. Those gauges are made by hand and orientate on old floor tiles and design books of ancient manufactures.

When filling the gauges, fill in dots can happen. This is no mistake but part of the traditional production process and character of the tiles.

Floor heating.

Generally, cement tiles are placed and glued on a cement floor. Cracks in material will not happen.

Gap width.

Traditionally, cement mosaic tiles and terrazzo tiles are placed with just a tiny gap width. This keeps the design undisturbed and the tiles’ edges are protected.

Glue.

It is not enough to use any kind of fast sticking glue to place the tiles. The glue has to be flexible to compensate possible tensions inside the glue film.

When placing the tiles they are a little wet. While drying them in the following weeks, this wetness will disappear.

The tiles may not be watered. Do not wash the tiles just after placing. The wetness while raise enormously and the glue will be overstrained.

Grouting.

The gap content is made out of 1/3 quartz sand (0,1 - 0,3 mm) and 2/3 grass cement. When adding water, a yoghurt like consistency will appear. IMPORTANT: The gap content may not include any plastic particles or color pigments. This would bloom the tiles and cannot be removed.

Impregnation.

Cement mosaic tiles behave the same way as natural stone or other open-cell materials. This requires a treatment with VIA tile oil. In this procedure, the hardening oil closes the cells. Without impregnation, every liquid can infiltrate the tiles. For impregnation, a non-rotating polishing machine is required. IMPORTANT: The floor has to rest for one week to become absolutely dry before starting the impregnation. Otherwise the cells will not absorb the oil.

Material And Production.

A layer with ferrite pigment made out of white cement, marble flour and quartz sand is filled up with plaster and gets pressed under high pressure - the more stress, the smoother the layer. The result: a massive 1,8 cm strong tile with 3 mm marble layer. The tiles will be dried - not burned. The drying process takes about 10 weeks.

One-Colored Surfaces.

Have the courage to colors and designs. Pure white on the floor may let you frustrate. It is hard to clean and you can see every little piece of dirt. Furthermore, a light bloom will appear due to natural process.

Open Places.

Open places happen on terrazzo tiles because of little air entrapments or an uneven apportionment. This is no mistake but a natural character.

Placing Program.

Make your own tile placing with your cubic measures with VIA Placing Program. You will find this program on our website. Create different designs, save them and we will send you our offers. Lets have a try!

Quartz Sand.

As gap content, VIA recommend a mixture made out of quartz sand (granularity 0,1 - 0,3 mm) and grass cement. Mixed with water, the content will get a yoghurt like consistency. It is important that the content has no plastic particles as these rub themselves into the layer and may cause a bloom.

Rawness.

The tiles will arrive raw and untreated at your place. There are not oiled and not impregnated. They have to be stored in a dry and save area. After placing them, the procedure of oiling and impregnation may begin.

Resistance.

In 19th century, cement mosaic tiles and terrazzo tiles were popular for their resistance and tough characteristics. You can still find them in original in many entrances and economic areas. You can see with the right care VIA tiles can outlast centuries.

Sample Tiles.

If you would like to check colors, feel, quality and design locally, you may order single tiles in our online shop. Please note that we might not have sample tiles of every single design in our selection.

Shine.

Extra shine can be reached due to polishing with diamond cutting pads (see Diamond Cutting Pads). Do not polish dry floor. Even floors which are centuries old can be polished this way.

Silicon.

VIA recommends to be saving with silicons. Use natural stone silicon without acids only.

Soft Soaps.

Traditionally, soft soap is used to clean cement mosaic tiles and terrazzo tiles. The floor is perfectly maintained due to natural back lubrication. VIA soft soap is perfect for your tiles. Dosage: 1 table spoon in 10l water.

Strength.

Cement has a high compressive strength but cannot be bent. While fabrication the tiles are pressed with 100 to per 20x20 cm tile.

It is necessary to place the tiles in a Buttering Floating Process to impart the strength to the ground below.

Terrazzo.

Terrazzo tiles have already been a popular floor layer in the antique. In this time, the floor pavement was processed directly on the floor.

VIA produces the historical tiles in a size of 20x20 cm. We use the terrazzo typical colors black, white, grey, white. Due to the granularity the designs are not absolutely precise. Terrazzo tiles are resistant and resilient in every interior room. There are is gap between two tiles.

Tile Oil.

VIA tile oil is a deep entering, open-cells natural product with a high filling power and fast drying process. After using our oil, layers are water-repellent and free of any toxics. One bottle of VIA tile oil (1000ml) can treat 30 to 40 qm.

Yeah!

You will say yeah when placing of the tiles is completely finished. The tiles will unfold their beauty. You will see.
